If Tokyo is the city that wants you to plan and Kyoto is the city that wants you to wake up early, Osaka is the city that wants you to eat. Aggressively. Constantly. The takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and a dozen other foods you've already saved videos of are not just available here — they originated here, and you can taste the difference.

The places below skew toward Dotonbori (you have to do it once, ideally late, ideally with a group) and the side streets of Namba where the queues are long but the price stays low. Osaka travels well as a 2-to-3-day add-on to Tokyo or Kyoto, and the bullet train makes it easy. Most travelers underweight it; the people who go come back planning their next Japan trip around it.

The city is famously friendlier than Tokyo. People will talk to you. Restaurants will joke with you. The energy is more Naples than Zurich. If your group has been quiet through Kyoto, Osaka will fix that. Stay near Namba or Umeda, plan the food first, and let the rest of the day fill itself in around the next meal.
