New York is the city that everyone has already seen 10,000 videos of and still arrives slightly unprepared for. The scale is bigger than the videos suggest. The neighborhoods are smaller than the videos suggest. The food is, in fact, that good — but only if you leave Times Square. The fix is to pick a borough or two and commit, then save the obvious Manhattan stops for the in-between hours.

The places below skew toward Lower Manhattan (the West Village, Lower East Side, NoHo), Brooklyn (Williamsburg and Greenpoint for slow days, Park Slope for the family trip), and Queens (Astoria for Greek, Flushing for the best Chinese food in North America). The pizza videos are real. The bagel videos are real. The cocktail bars in Chinatown that take three weeks to book are also real.

Three days isn't enough. Four to five lets you get into a rhythm. The subway is the right call 95% of the time, walking is the right call for short trips, and the rideshare apps are mostly there to be expensive on rainy nights. Stay in a quieter neighborhood, eat in louder ones, and accept that you'll never see all of New York; you can only see a New York.
