Barcelona is the rare city that's good at being two things at once: a beach trip and a culture trip, on the same day, without forcing you to choose. The morning at the Sagrada Família, the lunch in El Born, the afternoon at Barceloneta, the dinner in Gràcia at 10pm — that's a normal Tuesday here. You'll want to book Gaudí's sites in advance; everything else can be improvised.

The places below favor Gràcia and El Born, the neighborhoods most travel-video creators end up filming in even when they think they're filming "Barcelona." The tapas spots, the small wine bars, the bakery queues at 9am, the rooftop bars that earned their hype. The beach is real but the hotels right on it are mostly forgettable; base yourself one neighborhood inland and walk.

Three to five days is right. Stay near a metro stop on the green or yellow line, eat dinner late (Spanish late, not American late), and accept that nothing opens before 9am. If you're traveling with a group, the late dinners are the right call — they give you all afternoon to nap, swim, walk, and disagree about which bar to start at.
