A city built in 25 years, designed for travel videos, and weirdly good at brunch.

Dubai is the city travel-video creators visit and have to immediately reckon with: the malls actually are that big, the brunches actually are that involved, and the desert actually is that close. The travel-video version of Dubai is real — but it skips the Dubai locals love, which is in the older neighborhoods, the spice and gold souks across the creek, and the small abra ferries that cost a single dirham.

The places below mix both. The skyline highlights you came for (the Burj, Palm Jumeirah, the Marina at night), the brunches that earn their reputation, and the Old Dubai stops on Bur Dubai and Deira that the algorithm leaves out. Most groups planning a Dubai trip overweight Marina nightlife. It's fun for a night. It's not the city.

Three to five days is the right length, and Dubai works exceptionally well as a long stopover on a longer trip — into the Indian Ocean, into Asia, or into Africa. Rent a car if you want to do the desert; otherwise the metro is excellent and Careem is cheap. Brunch on a Friday is the right call. Brunch on a Sunday is also the right call. Brunch is the call.
