Sydney is the rare big city where the best things to do are mostly outdoors and mostly free. The harbour walks, the coastal hike from Bondi to Coogee, the ferry rides that the locals also use as commutes, the beaches that don't even make the top-10 lists because there are too many of them. Travel videos do well here because the city photographs at every hour, but the depth comes from spending entire days outside.

The places below skew toward Surry Hills and Newtown (the small dinners, the second-wave coffee shops, the dive bars that became destinations), Bondi and the eastern beaches, and the harbourside walks that take a half-day if you do them slowly. The Opera House is worth seeing in person; the Harbour Bridge climb is worth it if you're not afraid of heights; the morning swim at Bondi is worth getting up early for.

Four to seven days is right, and Sydney pairs naturally with a Blue Mountains overnight or a Hunter Valley wine day. The transit system is good but slow; rideshare is reasonable; walking is the right call along the harbour. Plan around the weather, not the itinerary — when the sun is out, you're outside.
