Bali is not a destination. It's three or four destinations stacked on top of each other, and the most common mistake is trying to base yourself in one place and "see" the others as day trips. Don't. Pick two or three villas and split your trip — Ubud for jungle and slow mornings, Canggu for the surf-and-coffee crowd, Uluwatu for the cliffside sunsets, and the East coast if you want fewer travel videos and more quiet.

The places below skew toward what real travelers save: warungs with five-star reviews you've never heard of, beach clubs that earned the hype, the temple complexes that are still worth the early wake-up. The wellness scene is real and also a trap — the best yoga in Ubud is often the one nobody has filmed yet.

A week is not enough. Ten days is the minimum to feel like you actually went. Two weeks is the move if you can swing it, and it'll cost less than a long weekend in Paris. Hire a driver for the long crossings, scoot for the short ones, and assume Sundays will be slower than you wanted them to be.
