Singapore is the city most travelers underestimate. They book it as a 48-hour stopover, blow through Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, and leave thinking it was "clean and a bit boring." That's a wasted trip. The real Singapore is in the hawker centers, the Peranakan terraces of Joo Chiat, the indie cafés of Tiong Bahru, and the night out in Telok Ayer that nobody managed to film.

The places below lean toward the food scene, because that's the unfair advantage here — you can eat a Michelin-starred plate of chicken rice for under $10 in the same building as a third-generation laksa stall. Hawker centers should be the spine of any trip. The mall food courts are also legitimately good, which feels wrong but is true.

Three to five days is the right length. The MRT is excellent, taxis are cheap, and walking works in the cooler months. Stay in Tanjong Pagar or Tiong Bahru for the food, Marina Bay if you want the iconic skyline view from your window. A day trip to Sentosa is fine if you have kids; otherwise, skip it and go to East Coast Park instead. The food is the city. Vote on it accordingly.
