Miami is the US city that most reliably feels like leaving the country without leaving it. The food scene has gotten quietly excellent in the last few years, the neighborhoods that aren't South Beach have stopped being treated as afterthoughts, and the city's Cuban, Haitian, Argentine, and Venezuelan layers are easier to access than ever. The travel videos that go viral here are usually filmed in the same six blocks; the better trip happens on the next twenty.

The places below skew toward Wynwood and the Design District (the food and the murals), Little Havana (for the obvious reasons but also for the dinners outside the tourist core), and Coconut Grove or Coral Gables for the slower mornings. South Beach is fine for one night and one beach day. Brickell is where you stay if you want walkable food at midnight.

A long weekend is the right length. Five days lets you do the Everglades or the Keys without rushing. Rent a car or commit to rideshare; public transit doesn't really exist here. The beach is best in the early morning before the crowds; the dinner culture is genuinely late, and accepting that fact is the whole trip.
