Couples, slow travel & first-time Japan

Kyoto is the city that punishes late starts. The travel videos that make Fushimi Inari look transcendent were almost all filmed before 7am — by 9, the gates are wall-to-wall, and by 11, the shoulder-to-shoulder Insta queue makes the whole thing feel like a theme park. Plan accordingly. Set an alarm. Drink your coffee on the train.

The places below skew toward the early-morning shrines, the small kaiseki dinners that are worth their reservation difficulty, and the small lanes of Higashiyama before the cruise-ship daytrippers arrive. Kyoto rewards travelers who plan but don't over-plan: pick a temple cluster per morning, a tea or coffee break in the afternoon, and a long dinner in the evening. The Philosopher's Path is best in shoulder season; the bamboo grove is best at 6am; the geisha districts are best on a quiet weeknight.

Three full days is the minimum. Five lets you actually unwind. If you can pair Kyoto with a few days in Osaka (45 minutes by train) you'll cover the spectrum of what Kansai does best — meditation in one city, street food in the other.
